The abandoned Royal Masonic School for Boys

Some have called it 'the most scary abandoned building in the UK'. The Royal Masonic School for Boys opened in Bushey, Hertfordshire in 1903. It was built using money from charities of set up by masonic organizations in order to educate the sons of needy Freemasons.

Another Masonic school was built and a Junior School was added on the other side of The Avenue in 1929. Following a decline in pupil numbers the junior school closed in 1970, with the senior school closing in 1977.

After their closure, the buildings housed the United States International University, but as the buildings' condition declined, they fell into disrepair. Both schools were also commonly used for films (such as Monty Python's The Meaning of Life, Lucky Jim, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and numerous TV shows) from the 1950s until recently. Part of the buildings have now been redeveloped as a gated housing development.

The abandoned Family School Fureai in Japan

The city of Yubari on Japan’s northernmost island of Hokkaido, is known as the "Detroit of Japan". Back in 1960 it was the "capital of coal" and had a population of 120,000. By 1990, when the last coal mine closed, the population had plummeted down to 20,000 people and when the city declared bankruptcy in 2007, less than 10,000 people still lived there. To make things worse, it's also the city with the oldest population in the country.

As coal miners and their families were fleeing Yubari during the last decades, they left behind a large number of abandoned buildings. Asahi Elementary School opened in 1975 to consolidate 3 other local schools (Teimi, Fukuzumi & Daini) that already experienced a sharp decline in the number of students. Then, 413 students were attending the school. By 1982, only 60 students were left.

It was then when it was decided to close the school and convert it into a public dormitory under the management a semi-public corporation – Yubari Kanko Kaihatsu. The building became known as Family School Fureai. In 2006 the company went bankrupt and the school closed forever.

Since then, Family School Fureai has been sitting abandoned. The building has been damaged due to water leaks while it has also been heavily vandalized. Wild animals and occasionally people can be found living inside.

The haunted Diplomat Hotel in the Philippines

Built on a hill with a panoramic view overlooking Baguio City, the Diplomat Hotel is considered one of the most haunted places in the Philippines. Its history dates back to 1911 when it was constructed as a retreat house by the Dominican Order in a 17-hectare land previously belonging to Americans.

From its inauguration in 1915 and for 2 years it was used as a college "Collegio del Santissimo Rosario", but due to lack of students it was converted back to a retreat house. During World War II, the building gave refuge to people fleeing from the Japanese who bombed it and its surroundings.

After the war, the old convent underwent a reconstruction which finished in 1948 when it opened as a 33-bed hotel, while retaining some components from the past, like its large white stone cross. During the 1970's the hotel was managed by Antonio “Tony” C. Agpaoa, an entrepreneur and faith healer who used the hotel to treat patients using psychic surgery, "operating" on his conscious patients with his bare hands, without leaving a trace of any incision. While some considered him a fraud, people from all over the world would visit Baguio City to be healed inside the Diplomat Hotel.

The hotel finally shut down and left abandoned in 1982 when Agpaoa died at the age of 42. Even since the Diplomat Hotel was open, people would report hearing strange noises and seeing headless apparitions and those sightings would continue after the hotel shut down, giving it the reputation of one of the most haunted places in Baguio City. People would experience screams, rattling and clanging sounds alternating with total silence while the derelict condition of the hotel added to the eerie atmosphere. Some said those were the spirits of Agpaoa and his patients while others believe it were the restless spirits of those killed in the war such as beheaded priests and nuns.

Since 2005,the Diplomat Hotel belongs to Baguio City which began a restoration project for the building and the surrounding area. In 2013 it was declared a historical site and today it can be rented for weddings and other events.

Lebanon's abandoned Grand Aley Hotel

Grand Aley Hotel was built in 1926 on a hilltop overlooking the old resort town of Aley, just off the main highway linking Beirut to Damascus. The area was a popular destination for visitors from Beirut and neighboring countries and the 3 brothers who owned the hotel called on the services of an Italian architect working in Lebanon at the time to design Grand Aley Hotel.

During World War II the hotel was requisitioned by the British army and used as their headquarters in the region. Later, it also became the headquarters of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) who, along with British and French troops, invaded Syria and Lebanon.

During the next 20 years Grand Aley Hotel became again a popular venue for evening entertainment - gambling, concerts and dancing, while its garden was large enough to have a pool with rowing boats.

Then came Lebanon's civil war and the hotel was once more sporadically occupied by foreign mercenary allies of local militias. Damage suffered during the war was too expensive to fix and its owners were forced to sell the hotel for a fraction of its worth. The new owner turned a part of the hotel into a school that taught a bilingual Arabic and English programme. In 2008 an unpaid loan forced foreclosure. Since then Grand Aley hotel remains abandoned as there have been no potential buyers.

Inside an abandoned military aviation academy in Russia

This abandoned military aviation academy was photographer somewhere in Russia by urban explorer alexdoomer2009 in 2013. It consists of a big academic building which was abandoned about a year before those photographs were taken. However, it looks like someone kept guarding it for some time after that.

Inside the building we can see different rooms like labs, workshop rooms, offices and storage rooms. In a chemistry lab the furniture and equipment are still left intact. Bottles with chemical agents and aviation fuel samples can be see over testing benches. Inside lecture halls the chalkboards are still written with information while storage rooms are filled with books and other equipment. Inside an office wall we can see an old map of the Soviet Union.

Horror Labs: The abandoned Anderlecht Veterinary School

It looks like a set of a horror film. The abandoned labs of Anderlecht Veterinary School in Brussels is one of the creepiest deserted places we've seen. The veterinary school was based in a complex of 19 Flemish neo-Renaissance style buildings, constructed in the early 20th century. In 1969 it was incorporated into the University of Liège, losing its independence.

The veterinary school abandoned the building in 1991, moving to the Sart-Tilman district of Liège. What was left behind though amazed urban explorers for years. Heads, brains and various other anatomical samples of kittens, dogs, rats and pigs decaying inside jars filled with formaldehyde. Around them, bottles with unknown fluids, syringes and other old, rusty medical equipment.

By late 2014, most of those specimens were removed as the buildings were under renovation. The site of the old veterinary school is going to be turned into executive apartments.

An abandoned college campus in Australia

This abandoned college is in the northern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia. The entire TAFE (Technical And Further Education) campus, which included restaurant, library, lecture theatre, scores of classrooms and other buildings has been left abandoned for years together with much of its equipment and furnishing.

An abandoned university in Belgium

This university in Belgium has been left abandoned, with last students leaving in 2005. In its classrooms and corridors there are still teaching materials and equipment left behind, among them thousands of computer punched cards. Blogger lunie_chan visited the abandoned university a few months ago.

An abandoned Russian school

This abandoned school is in Murmansk, the largest city of the Arctic circle, 2000 km (1242 miles) away from Moscow, Russia. It shut down in 2005 due to its age and the low number of students who were transferred to a new school. There were plans for the building to be turned into a hotel but this didn't happen.

An abandoned Detroit High School, now and then

Lewis Cass Technical High School is one of the most historic schools of Detroit. It was founded in 1907 and by 1942 it was the largest school in Michigan with 4,200 students attending the eight-storey brick and limestone building. Its alumni include musicians Diana Ross and Jack White.

In 2004 the school was moved to new, modern facilities. The old building was left abandoned, and 3 years later it was damaged by a big fire. Finally, by the end of 2011 the building was demolished.

Before the school's demolition, detroiturbex.com spent time taking pictures of each room of the building and combined them with old photos of the exact locations.

An abandoned Russian mansion

An abandoned mansion in the Russian countryside. Once inhabited by rich, it became a school for kids with disabilities after the Russian Revolution of 1917. Today, it remains an abandoned reminder of the past.
