The abandoned 'El Caballo Blanco' theme park of Sydney

'El Caballo Blanco' (The White Horse) was a Spanish-inspired amusement park, which opened in 1974 in the Catherine Field suburb, south-west of Sydney, Australia. The park was opened by Western Australian business entrepreneur Ray Williams who had brought the first Spanish horses in Australia a few years earlier.

El Caballo Blanco's main attraction was its Andalusian dancing stallions, but the park also featured miniature Falabella miniature horses, and a number of non-equestrian related amusements such as waterslides, train rides, and a small wildlife zoo.

After the park shut down in 1999, the site was partly used to store items such as carpets, until a fire engulfed much of the building housing the main show arena. In 2015, demolition of the remaining buildings and attractions commenced to make way for a residential development.

Photos of Australia's disappearing pubs

Australian photographer Ryan Cremer has captured photos of pubs, many of them abandoned, scattered in the Riverina region of New South Wales for his project titled 'Last Drinks'

As the rural economy has declined, so has the population forcing many of those establishments to shut down. Meanwhile, crime rates have soared. According to Cramer, the Balldale Hotel closed after being robbed 6 times. Other pubs faced unprecedented tragedy like The Conargo Hotel which was first built in the 1850s and burnt down in 2014.

The ghost town of Farina in South Australia

The town of Farina was settled in 1878, 650 kilometres (400 miles) to the north of Adelaide  on the edge of the desert and along the old route of the Ghan railway. Originally called The Gums or Government Gums, its first settlers were farmers who believed in the theory of rain follows the plow, meaning that human habitation and agriculture through homesteading could permanently change the climate, thus making an inhospitable environment livable.

The 1880's brought some wet weather for Farina and the settlers planned  to grow wheat and barley and expand the town to 432 ¼-acre blocks. By the end of the century, Farina reached a peak population of approximately 600. Then, the town had two hotels (the Transcontinental and the Exchange), an underground bakery, a bank, two breweries, a general store, an Anglican church, five blacksmiths, a school and a brothel.

Despite the optimistic hopes of Farina's settlers the town's climate didn't change dramatically and the 20th century brought a decline in population. The post office closed in the 1960's and the railway line closed in the 1980's. Today Farina has been turned into a ghost town, with only a few dozen residents living in a small settlement west of the town.

During the last years there have been volunteer efforts to restore the town, including the repair of the bakery and the addition of informational signs.

SS Ayrfield, Sydney's floating forest

Homebush Bay, west of Sydney, Australia, is home to a few decommissioned ships as the area was once used as a ship-breaking yard. The most famous and unique among them though is SS Ayrfield

Originally launched as SS Corrimal, it was built in the UK in 1911 and commissioned in Sydney in 1912. She was purchased by the Commonwealth Government and used to transport supplies to American troops stationed in the Pacific region during World War II. After the war, it was sold to Miller Steamship Company Ltd and renamed Ayrfield. For 20 years, SS Ayrfield operated as a collier between Newcastle and Miller’s terminal in Blackwattle Bay.

In 1972 SS Ayrfield was sent to Homebush Bay for breaking up, where its hall still remains floating, covered by lush vegetation.

An abandoned concert arena in Western Australia

Perth Entertainment Center opened its doors on 27 September 1974 and for the next 3 decades it was the venue of choice for many top international rock and pop artists. Queen, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, U2 and Oasis were only few of the names that performed on its stage.

The indoor arena, built in the city center of Perth, Western Australia, had a capacity of 8,000 seats and it is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest purpose built regular theatre (containing a proscenium arch) in the world. Except of music concerts, it also hosted theatrical plays, musicals, circuses, corporate functions and international beauty pageants (Miss Universe 1979). From 1990 to 2002, it was home to NBL team Perth Wildcats and from 1988 to 1989 to WNBL's Perth Breakers.

The venue officially closed in August 2002 and remained abandoned ever since. It was demolished between May and December 2011, and now a new facility called Perth Arena is being built in its place.
