A Mexican church, half buried in lava

In the early days of the year 1943 and for several weeks, residents of San Juan Parangaricutiro town, in the Mexican state of Michoacán started hearing noises similar with thunder. These noises didn't come from the blue, cloudless sky but from the earth beneath them. The noises were followed by earthquakes which grew in number day by day.

On February 20th, the earth cracked and a 2-meter (6.5 inches) tall volcanic cone formed in the middle of a cornfield. By the next day the cone of Parícutin volcano had grown 50 meters (60 feet) tall and was ejecting ash and smoke. The volcano's growth and activity continued for months until it reached a height of 200 meters (650 feet) in June. This is when it started ejecting lava which moved towards the village of San Juan Parangaricutiro.

The residents had enough time to evacuate as the lava moved slowly and no life was lost. They all moved to a new location 30 km (18 miles) away forming a new town named Nuevo (New) San Juan Parangaricutiro. The old town was eventually buried under feet of volcanic rock. The only building that stands over the lava until today is the town's church. Being the town's tallest and perhaps the most solid building, saved part of the church from the wrath of lava.

The Mexican Island of the Dolls

Dolls with severed limbs, decapitated heads and blank eyes can be seen all over the abandoned Isla de las Muñecas - the Island of the Dolls. The island, created as an artificial agricultural plot or chinampa, in the canals of Xochimilco, south of Mexico City, used to belong to a man called Julián Santana Barrera.

The story goes that Barrera found a little girl drowned under mysterious circumstances while he was not able to save her life. Near her dead body he found a floating doll, possibly belonging to the dead girl. He picked up the doll and hung it to a tree, as a way of showing respect to the spirit of the girl. That's when he started collecting the old broken bodies of dolls from the canals and rubbish tips, and hang them from branches and tree trunks to keep away evil spirits and appease the spirit of a dead girl he had found.

He then started believing that the dolls were possessed by the spirits of dead girls and that they would come to life every night and walk around the island. In 2001, Barrera was found drowned at exactly the same place he discovered the little girl 50 years earlier. Since then, visitors stared going to the island, often bringing their own dolls. The creepy dolls are today the sole inhabitants of Isla de las Muñecas.

Mexico's abandoned 'Monumento de Mestizaje'

Monumento de Mestizaje was supposed to be a mega monument celebrating the Mestizo culture, built on a small island close to the shore, in the city of Chetumal, Mexico. Chetumal's former governor Joaquin Hendricks Diaz envisioned a massive iron construction, on the scale of Eiffel Tower and millions of pesos were invested. A 60 meter (200 feet) high arch was built but the construction was never finished.

Today, the  monument remains unfinished and abandoned on its small island, often visited by tresspassers.
