Shanghai's largest vacant building: A mall in the shape of Pentagon

It looks just like the US Pentagon but it's double the size! This Chinese knockoff is the largest unoccupied building in Shanghai according to media reports. A classic case of Chinese overspending, Pentagonal Mart, located in Shanghai's Nanhui district, spans out a massive 70 acres (compared to 34 acres for the Department of Defense headquarters in Washington DC.)

Most of the building has been unoccupied since construction ended in 2009 due to the mall's confusing interiors. The mall failed to attract retailers and according to media reports hope remained alive in the form of the Shanghai Disney Resort which opened in June 2016 and it's located just 8 km (5 miles) away.

The abandoned Rolling Acres Mall in Ohio

Rolling Acres Mall opened in 1975 in the Rolling Acres area of Akron, Ohio. It started with 21 stores but through the next 2 decades it expanded multiple times reaching more than 140 stores, including five anchor stores, a movie theater and a food court.

The mall's demise began in the late 1990's when it started losing stores. Two of its anchor stores, Dillard's and JCPenney, were downgraded to clearance centers in 1997 and 1999. In 2000 the mall was sold to Bankers Trust who gave the mall a new logo as well as a website. The mall's cinema -closed since 1993- reopened again only to be closed once more 2 years later.

In 2006, big stores started leaving Rolling Acres. Target, Dillard's Clearance Center and Macy's were all closed by 2008. The only stores to remain in operation by the end of the year in the now empty mall were Sears and JCPenney Outlet. Both of them finally moved out in December 2013. Since then, the abandoned Rolling Acres Mall has changed owners multiple times. None of them were able to reopen it.

An abandoned Thai shopping mall overtaken by fish

New World shopping mall in Bangkok, Thailand used to be an eleven storey building. Its top seven floors were demolished in 1997 though as it was found to be in breach of the city's building codes. In 1999 the mall was burned down in a suspected arson and several people were killed. Since then, the building remained abandoned.

As its roof had collapsed, the basement floor remains under several feet of water year round. During the early 2000's, an unknown person introduced a small population of the domesticated Koi fish species do deal with the growing mosquito problem. The population began to thrive and the mall's basement became a self-sustained urban aquarium.

Blogger and photographer Jesse Rockwell took some photos in the abandoned mall last year, which quickly went viral.

An abandoned mall in St. Louis

Crestwood Court, previously known as Crestwood Plaza, was the first major shopping mall to open in the St. Louis area back in 1957. It was such an important landmark for the city, that John F. Kennedy gave a speech in the mall's parking lot during his 1960 campaign. Crestwood was originally an open-air mall but it was enclosed in 1984.

During its last 15 years, Crestwood Court changed ownership twice but this didn't help with its decreasing number of visitors who probably prefered to visit newer open-air malls. Tenants started abandoning the mall and on September 2013, the last remaining store shut down. Since then, Crestwood Court has remained completely vacant. Digital artist Dan Wampler visited the mall and took a series of fascinating photos.

The largest -and loneliest- shopping mall in the world

New South China Mall located in Dongguan, China has the title of the largest shopping mall in the world based on gross leasable area but it might also be the world's emptiest one. Today, out of its 659,612 square metres (7,100,000 sq ft) of leasable space -and 892,000 square metres (9,600,000 sq ft) of total area- only about 1% of it is occupied, leaving the areas away of the building's entrance deserted.

The mall has seven zones modeled on international cities, nations and regions, including Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, Venice, Egypt, the Caribbean, and California. Features include a 25 metres (82 ft) replica of the Arc de Triomphe, a replica of Venice's St Mark's bell tower, a 2.1 kilometres (1.3 mi) canal with gondolas, and a 553-meter indoor-outdoor roller coaster. While the mall has 2350 leasable spaces, only 47 are occupied.

The low occupancy of the world's largest mall is blamed on its location, away from the city's center, and the difficult access as there is no highway close to the mall and it's only accessible by car or bus.
